Freeroam is the quintessential mode of BeamNG.drive, offering an expansive sandbox experience where the only limit is your imagination. With a diverse array of maps, from winding mountain roads and sprawling cities to rugged off-road trails and specialized test environments, Freeroam encourages players to explore, experiment, and create their own scenarios. It’s the perfect place to test vehicle limits, choreograph spectacular crashes, practice extreme driving, or simply enjoy the detailed physics without any objectives or pressure.
Your Sandbox, Your Rules: Embracing Freeroam
No objectives, just endless possibilities for driving and destruction.
- Map Selection: Choose from a wide variety of official and modded maps.
- Standard Maps: “West Coast, USA” (city/highway), “Utah, USA” (desert off-road), “East Coast, USA” (rural/town), “Jungle Rock Island” (diverse terrain).
- Specialized Maps: “Gridmap” (basic testing ground), “Derby Arenas” (for demolition).
- Vehicle Spawning: You can spawn multiple vehicles simultaneously. This allows for multi-car pile-ups, convoy driving, or simply having a variety of cars to switch between. Use
Ctrl+E
to open the vehicle spawn menu. - Vehicle Customization (Parts Editor): A powerful tool (
Ctrl+W
) allowing you to change individual components of your vehicle in real-time. Add turbochargers, change suspension, swap engines, apply armor, or even remove parts for custom destruction. - World Editor (F11): For advanced users, the World Editor allows you to manipulate the environment, place props, create ramps, or even design your own simple scenarios within a map.
- Scenarios and Challenges (Improvised): While dedicated scenarios exist, Freeroam lets you create your own. Set up custom jump ramps, create a demolition derby with AI cars, or attempt to drive a severely damaged vehicle back to “safety.”
- Physics Settings (F9): Adjust the physics refresh rate. Higher values make the simulation more accurate but are more demanding on your CPU.
- Time of Day/Weather: Most maps allow you to change the time of day and weather conditions, altering lighting and driving dynamics.
- Traffic AI: You can spawn AI traffic (

to toggle,Alt+T
for options) to create more dynamic environments, allowing for realistic highway crashes or simply making the world feel more alive.
Freeroam in BeamNG.drive is where the game’s unparalleled physics truly shine, offering endless opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and automotive mayhem.
